Artist Biography: Born 21 Sept. 1900 in Bendery, near Odessa in the Ukraine, where his father was stationed as an Army officer. Left Russia for Germany in 1920 and by 1923 had become part of the Russian emigrÈ community in Paris working with Leon Bakst and Simon Lissim among others. In 1924 began to design for the movies, beginning with Jean Epstein's Le Lion des Mogols. In 1930 began work with Russian Opera in Paris, continuing at same time to work with movies as well as the Russian Ballets of Diaghilev and their successors (Monte Carlo, Olga Spessivtzeva, Bronislava Nijinska, etc.). Designed sets and costumes for Debussy's PellÈas and Melisande at Covent Garden for coronation of George VI in 1937. Refused by the French army in 1939, he moved to Italy with his Italian wife. Died of illness in Catania, Sicily on Feb. 3, 1948.
