Artist Biography: Painter, draughtsman, and ornitholigist. Student of David in Paris, 1795-1796. Devoted himself to natural history subjects, and birds in particular. Most notable artist to study the fauna of the United States. Audubon's highly defined and beautifully composed images of North American birds and quadropeds constitute one of the last grand applications of art to the service of science.
