Artist Biography: Academic history and genre painter. Studied under Baron A. J. Gros and Paul Delroche. Won Prix de Rome in 1837. Was very popular as a teacher. His pupils included Edouard Manet, Jean-FranÁois Millet, Puvis de Chavannes, William Morris Hunt, and John La Farge. Membership in the Legion of Honour, 1848.
