Artist Biography: Illustrator. Born in New Jersey 1816. Came to California with the Gold Rush in 1849. Made first pictures of Yosemite in 1856 (exhibited 1857).~Hired in 1857 by Harper*s Illustrated Weekly for a series of sketches of California. Began in Southern California, but was drowned at sea on ship returning from San Pedro to San Francisco. (see Edan Milton Hughes. Artists in California, 2nd ed., p. 27)
