Artist Biography: Fritz Eichenberg was born in Cologne, Germany on Oct. 24, 1901. He studied at the State Academy of Graphic Arts in Leipzig under Hugo Steiner-Prag and, while still a student began to illustrate his first books with original prints. In 1933 he left Germany and moved to New York. In 1947 he began to teach at the Pratt Institute and created the ADLIB Press. In 1956 he bacame Chairman of the Department of Graphic Arts and also founded the Pratt Graphic Arts Center in Manhattan, where he seved as director until 1968. In 1961 he started Artist's Proof, a publication solely devoted to contemporary printmaking, sponsored by the Pratt Institute. He has illustrated many books. Eichenberg has been honored by memberships in the Royal Society for Arts, The National Academy, the American Institute of Graphic Art and the Pennell Committee of the Library of Congress. He died on Nov. 30, 1990.
