Artist Biography: A pupil of both J.-A. Silvestre, drawiqg master to the royal children of France, and Joseph-Marie Vien, a neoclassical painter, Aubry began his career as a portraitist. He exhibited several portraits, including one of Etienne Jeaurat, in his debut at the official Salon of 1771. Accepted as a full member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1775, he turned increasingly toward the genre painting by which he is best known. A fine colorist, he was inspired by Jean-Baptiste Greuze's moralizing subject matter and by Fragonard's handling of paint. In 1777 he traveled to Rome to study at the French Academy under the auspices of the comte d'Angivillier, his most important patron. However, his ambition to be a history painter was not successful, and he returned to France in 1780. His final attempt at the grand manner was exhibited posthumously at the Salon of 1781 (Coriolanus s Farewell to His Wife before Leauing to Give Himself up to the Volsii, lost). His originality is most apparent in his portraiture, characterized by a robust technique and psychological insight. His portraits of the aristocracy tend to be more formal and restrained than the intimate, even affectionate, likenesses of his fellow artists, such as Noel Halle and L.-C. Vasse (both Chateau de Versailles).
