Artist Biography: Born in Rotterdam, the oldest son of a master bricklayer and a midwife, Pieter de Hooch was baptized on 20 December of that year in the Reformed Church. Tradition has the young De Hooch working in the Haarlem studio of Nicolas Berchem along with Jacob Ochtervelt. However, following the baptismal record no further mention of Pieter has been found in contemporary documents until a citation in the city archives of Delfl for August 1652. At that time he and the artist Hendrick van der Burgh witnessed a will, and both were listed as residents of Delft. De Hooch must have retained ties in Rotterdam, where he is recorded in 1654 at the time of his betrothal to Jannetze van der Burgh, Hendrick's sister. De Hooch had joined the Guild of Saint Luke in Delft by September 1655, and his early paintings include landscapes, guardroom scenes, and stable interiors. The artist remained in Delfl until moving permanently to Amsterdam by 1661. The Delft years proved the most creative of his career. Paintings from that period exhibit a restrained harmony of composition and color, which bespeak the peaceful order of the domestic interiors he recreated. This austerity of compositional means was compromised once the artist moved to the more cosmopolitan Amsterdam, where he catered to upper-middle-class patronage. Although De Hooch's art was previously thought to have derived from that of his townsman Johannes Vermeer, it is now recognized that De Hooch was initially influenced by the domestic scenes of the Dordrecht artist Nicolaes Maes. Vermeer in turn drew on and refined the early innovations of both Maes and De Hooch. Pieter de Hooch died in a lunatic asylum in 1684, the year of his last dated painting.~
