Artist Biography: Born on 15 October 1850 in Orleans to a family long involved in the theater, Boutet de Monvel was encouraged in his desires to become an artist. At age nineteen, he entered the studio of Alexandre Cabanel. After military service in the Franco-Prussian War, he resumed his academic training with Jules Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger and in 1875 began studies with Charles-Emile Carolus-Duran. He first exhibited at the Salon in 1874. He won a second-class medal in 1880 and later a gold medal at the Paris Exposition of 1900. Although known at first for his portMits, landscapes, and oriental subjects, Boutet de Monvel achieved his fame as an illustMtor of children's books and historical liteMture. A commission from Charles Delagrave in 1880 for illustMtions for his new children's magazine Saint Nicolas: Jouma/ illustre pour gar~cons et filles launched his new career. Many other projects followrd, the most famous being a pictorial life of Joan of Arc, in both book form and large panels. Developing his watercolor technique, he continued to paint portraits, often in small scale in a meticulous watercolor style. A major exhibition and tour took place in the United States in 1899.
