Artist Biography: Baptized on 6 June 1638, Gerrit Berckheyde spent most of his active career in his native Haarlem. His earliest biographer, the eighteenth-century historian Arnold Houbraken, established the tradition that Gerrit was trained by his older brother Job, himself a painter of cityscapes. Both brothers, however, owed much to the tradition of architectural painting popularized in Haarlem by Pieter Saenredam. Saenredam's work was accessible via original paintings and through an influential suite of prints after his views of Haarlem, etched by Jan van de Velde 11. Before entering the Haarlem guild in July 1660, the Berckheyde brothers traveled in Germany, residing first in Cologne and then in Heidelberg. There they worked for Karl-Ludwig, Elector Palatinate. Upon returning to Holland the brothers again took up residence in Haarlem. Dated works by Gerrit survive from after the mid-1660s. In addition to a small number of landscapes and interiors, his painted ccuvre is composed of cityviews, principally featuring Haarlem, Amsterdam, The Hague, and Cologne. At times Gerrit called on other artists, including Nicholas Guerrard, Johannes van Huchtenberg, Johannes Lingelbach, and Dirck Maas, to paint the staffage figures in his townscapes. Of the drawings identified as by Berckheyde most are preparatory studies for paintings. He wasburied in the Haarlem Janskerk on 14 June 1698, having drowned on the night of 10 June, aher an evening at a local tavern.
