Artist Biography: Born Eduard Jean Steichen in Luxembourg. Came to the United States, Hancock MI, in 1881; settled in Milwaukee in 1889. Trained as a painter. Renounced painting in 1922 and burned all his canvases. An associate of Alfred Stieglitz. Designed the cover for Stieglitz's Camera Work. An influential fashion photographer. Organized the Family of Man Exhibition in 1955. Director, Department of Photography, MOMA, NY.;
