Artist Biography: Born Carleton Eugene Watkins. Some books give 1825 as his birthdate, but 1829 seems more reliable. Went to California 1851/1852. Studied photography with Robert Vance in San Francisco 1854. Own studio by 1861, specialized in views. Yosemite Gallery in 1867. Bankrupt in 1874, negatives printed by I.W. Taber in 1870*s and 1880*s. Continued work in 1890*s. Studio destroyed 1906 earthquake. Died 1916.
