Artist Biography: Born in Hungary 1895, died in Chicago 1946; in the U. S. after 1938~Painter, photographer, and art teacher. Had vision of a nonrepresentational art consisting of pure visual fundamentals (i.e. color, texture, light, and balance of forms). Was immensely influential in both the fine and applied arts of the mid-20th century.~~Headed the metal workshop of the Bauhaus school of design in Berlin, and later founded the New Bauhaus in Chicago.
