Artist Biography: Born Eleazer (or Eliezer, or Lazar) Markowitch Lissitsky. Called El Lissitzky. Studied and worked in Russia. Painter, typographer, and designer. Pioneer of nonrepresentational art in early 20th century. Innovations in typography, advertising, and exhibition design were particularly influential.
