Artist Biography: Portrait painter and draftsman. Was the most fashionable English portrait painter of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Moved to London in 1787. Associate of the Royal Academy in 1790, full member in 1794, president in 1820. Named painter to the king in 1792 on death of Joshua Reynolds.
