Artist Biography: A leading Mannerist painter in 16th-century Holland. Worked in the Italianate manner. Spent 1527-1529 in the Haarlem studio of Jan van Scorel. Early works adhered closely to the Romanist style of Scorel, with even more dramatic lighting and illusionistic effects of plasticity. ~~In Rome 1532-1536. Sketched the architecture and sculpture of classical antiquity and the painting of the High Renaissance. Particularly interested in the frescoes of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel and those of Raphael in the Villa Farnesina. ~~The rest of a long career was spent almost exclusively in Haarlem, and he drew on Roman motifs. From 1548 onward he produced many designs for engravings. ~~Reference: Hollstein ,Volume VIII, pp. 228 ff.~
