Artist Biography: History painter. The child of a poor soldier, the young Pietro was abandoned by his parents to a mediocre painter, Andrea de' Ceri, who took the child as a domestic. De' Ceri recognized in eleven-year-old Pietro a talent for design, and placed him as a student with Rudolfo Ghirlandaio. Worked for Florentine painter, il Vaga, whose name he assumed. Went to Rome in 1515, was taken into the Raphael workshop and later married Luca Penni's sister. After the death of Raphael, Prince Doria invited him to Genoa, where he established a school of painting (1528). He left Genoa to work for Paul III in Florence. He is considered by some historians to be the greatest designer of the Florentine school after Michelangelo.
