Artist Biography: Called Piscator. Born in Amsterdam 1586 or 1587. Died in Amsterdam 19 June 1652. Draughtsman, etcher, cartographer and publisher. One of the largest publishing houses of the time. There would appear to be some discrepancy between Hollstein (XXXVIII p.7), Benezit (8 p.591), and Thieme-Becker (XXXIV p. 414) regarding birth and death dates for this Visscher. Many of the prints catalogued have the monogram, quoted in Benezit (eg A058547). Hollstein quotes recent scholarship (XXXVIII p.5) so this latest publication will take precedence.~Also known as Nicolas Joannis Visscher. Amsterdam engraver and publisher.
