Artist Biography: Reproductive engraver and damascener, born in Mantua ca. 1520 (also called Giorgio Mantovano). Brother of the painter Theodore Ghisi. In Rome for the papacy of Paul III (1534-49), then travelled to Antwerp ca. 1549 to work for Hieronymus Cock; he is registered in the Guild of St. Luke in 1551. Worked in France ca. 1562, his prints from that time bear the French Royal Privilege. Moved back to Mantua where he was employed by the Gonzaga as keeper of jewels and overseer of the wardrobe, until his death on 15 December 1582.~~Reference: Bartsch, Adam von. Le Peintre-graveur.
