Artist Biography: Engraver and painter of frescoes and altarpieces in Rome. Instructed in painting by his brother Giulio Borgiani (called "Scalzo") but learned mostly by assiduously studying and copying the works of the great masters in Rome. Was induced to visit Spain by the patronage bestowed on the arts by Philip II in that country, and lived their several years. In Spain he met with considerable artistic success. Returned to Rome and was patronized by the Spanish embassador and also by the churches. If his earlier works reveal the influence of Tintoretto, el Greco, and Carducho, then his more mature works accentuate the effects of lighting and belong more to the tradition of Caravaggio.~~Reference: Bartsch XVII; TIB vol. 38~
