Artist Biography: Regarded by some as the most important French painter of the 20th century. Leader of the Fauvist movement (c. 1900). Pursued the expressiveness of color throughout his career. Subjects were largely domestic or figurative, and a distinct Mediterranean verve presides in the treatment. ~~Reference: Duthuit-Matisse, Marguerite and Claude Duthuit. Henri Matisse. 2 vols.
