Artist Biography: Born Julia Margaret Pattle. One of seven daughters of a prosperous British family stationed in India. Educated in Britain and France after the death of her parents, she returned to India in 1838 and married Charles Hay Cameron, member of Council of India, who owned a coffee plantation in Ceylon. After settling in Freshwater on the Isle of Wight Cameron began her career in photography using a camera given to her by her daughter in 1863. Regarded by some as one of the greatest portraitists in the history of photography, although her portraits of famous men comprise only a small part of her total output during the fifteen years she practiced photography. Cameron also composed religious and allegorical photographs after Old Master paintings. She was a close friend of Tennyson, whose romatic anecdotal poetry often provided her inspiration. Returned to Ceylon 1875. Buried at Bogawantalawa with husband.
