Artist Biography: Born in Samana, Santo Domingo, West Indies on 09/20/1819; died in Paris on 10/08/1856; pupil of of Ingres; influenced by Delacroix~~Chasseriau's artistic talent was recognized at an early age. He was educated in Paris at Ingres's studio when he was eleven years old. At seventeen, he was a successful participant in the Salon of 1836. By 1840 Chasseriau's interest in romantic art led him away from the strict classicism of Ingres; he traveled to North Africa in 1846 and was inspired by the light, color, and exoticism he found there. Chasseriau's understanding of a new romantic idiom in combination with his solid academic training in the classic style proved successful. He undertook numerous projects and commissions in Paris, including the fresco cycle for the Salles des Comptes in the Palais d'Orsay, until his untimely death in 1856.
