Artist Biography: Portraitist, painter and engraver. Most of his mezzotints were original works, rather than reproductions. A set of his life-size head studies were admired enough by the painter Joseph Wright Derby that he based several figures in his paintings on Frye's designs. He is credited with teaching the mezzotint technique to William Pether. ~~ Born 1710, Dublin; died 1762. ~~Reference: Smith, J.C., "British Mezzotinto Portraits", London, 1879.~Wax, Carol, 'The Mezzotint', New York, 1990~~
