Artist Biography: Born Le Havre 1877; attended evening classes at the Municipal Art School where he met Othon Friesz and George Braque; went to Paris in 1900 becoming a pupil of LÈon Bonnat at L'
cole des Beaux-Arts; was influenced by Matisse in 1905 and adopted the manner of the Fauves; worked on textile design with Paul Poiret starting in 1911; Dufy's position in the artistic world became established by the mid 20s; many international exhibitions and awards followed; received the Internation Grand Prize for Painting at the Venice Biennale in 1952; many retrospective exhibitions of his work after his death in 1953.
