Painted murals for the Federal Art Project from 1935 to 1940. Taught at the State University of Iowa (1941-45) and other universities. Won first prize at the Carnegie International exhibition in 1945, was awarded Guggenheim fellowships in 1947 and 1968, and won the Rome Prize Fellowship of the American Academy in Rome in 1948. ~~Characteristic style developed early in the 1950s with "White Painting" series.
