Artist Biography: Balthasar Klossowski ( de Rola) born in Paris 29 Feb. 1908. Eccentric and reclusive painter. Died at his chalet near Gstaad in Switzerland 18 Feb. 2001.Second son of Polish born art historian and his German wife who settled in Paris in 1903. Parents separated 1917 and Balthus moved to Switzerland with his mother. Befriended by Rainer Maria Rilke,the German poet, who introduced him to AndrÈ Gide when he moved to Paris in 1924. After his parents died (1949 and 1969), he asked to be known by the old Polish title of Comte de Rola. Lived most of his life in France and Switzerland..
