Artist Biography: German-born British painter. Grandson of Sigmund Freud. Came to England with parents in 1931. Acquired British nationality in 1939. Earliest love was drawing, and began to work full time as an artist after being injured in the Merchant Navy in 1942. In 1951, "Interior at Paddington" won a prize at the Festival of Britain, and since then Freud has earned a formidable reputation as a powerful contemporary figurative painter. Specialities are portraits and nudes, often observed in arresting close-up. Early work was meticulously painted, thus he has sometimes been described as `Realist.' The subjectivity and intensity of his work have set him apart from the mostly sober tradition of British figurative art since the Second World War.~~Later work (from the late 1950s) demonstrates much broader handling.
