Artist Biography: James Sydney Ensor. Born to a Flemish mother and English father. Studied at Brussels Academy (1877-9). In late 1880s, he began to paint using the fantastic and macabre with which he is chiefly associated. One of the founders of "Groupe des Vignt" (Group of Twenty). Created a baron by King Albert in 1929. French Legion d*Honneur in 1933. The Surrealists considered him a forerunner.~~Reference: Croquez, Albert. L'oeuvre gravÈ de James Ensor.
