Artist Biography: Trained in weaving, CCAC 1946-1949. Received NEA grant 1975 to study traditional forms of weaving in Japan.Studied with Trude Giermonprez 1954-55, Jack Lenor Larsen, 1956. Kay Sekimachi is a Nesei or a second generation Japanese American. During World War II, her family was interned in Topaz, Utah. During interment, she interacted with artist Chiura Obata and Mine Okubo. Returning to the Bay area, Kay Sekimachi started studying at the California College of Art. Without money ansd wanting to focus her energy on weaving she left the CCAC. She spent her last $150 dollars and a loom and began working with the Contemporary Handweavers of California. She was included in three consecutive exhibitions of Contemporary Handweavers at the de Young Museum, curated by Elizabeth Moses. In 1953, she won third prize at the Design Craftsmen USA 1953 at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
