Artist Biography: David Seymour (known as “Chim”) was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1911. He studied graphic arts, printing methods, and photography first in Leipzig, Germany, and continued his education with courses in chemistry at the Sorbonne in Paris, France. David Seymour began his career as a photojournalist in 1933. He came to New York in 1939 and later joined the U.S. Army, serving in Europe during WWII. In 1942, Chim became an American citizen. He felt deeply about the tragic conditions of the times and is particularly known for photographing people in ways that sympathetically capture their humanity. Chim was one of the founders of the first international cooperative photographic agency, Magnum. Motivated to cover people impacted by volatile world events, he was exposed to many dangerous situations. He died covering the Suez crisis in 1956.
