Male basketry figure, Yupin, 20th century
Rattan, sacrificial material consisting of pig grease, blood, and ashes
Artist Biography: (none)
PROVENANCE: Jolika Collection of New Guinea Art
PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "See previous entry for information about Yupin figures. The South Australian Museum in Adelaide has a figure very similar to this one (registry number 66362). It has arms attached, but they appear to be of a somewhat different material and may have been added when the figure left the village (personal observation). The museum obtained it in 1975 by exchange with Dr. Paul Brennan of the Enga Cultural Council (museum records). The accompanying notes state that it was from Waimeran village near Paiela in the Enga district and that it was a kepele nuu, or clan ancestral figure, which "was used for placation purposes at times of crisis."
