Artist Biography: (none) PROVENANCE: Jolika Collection of New Guinea Art PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "The rectilinear style of these bracelets is a rare departure from New Guinea's predominantly curvilinear stlye. See Tischner, 1939, fig. 9 for smaller examples, and probably the first of such bracelets published. (See also Edmundson and Boylan, 1999, pl. 11, no.1 for another example.) The bracelets were made by men but apparently worn by girls above the wrist. Similar designs can be found on bark belts, which are only worn by men (see Tischner, 1939: 15, 17). There are also plaited bracelets with more or less comparable designs standing out in relief, as reported from the Eastern Highlands (e.g., Sinclair, 1975: 30), but no relationship between the wooden and plaited versions has been documented."
