PROVENANCE: "Collected by Thomas Schultze-Westrum in 1966." (Catalog #465, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 163.)
PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "According to Schultze-Westrum (1972, fig. 61), this gope was carved by a man anmed Naoa in the 19th century. With five similar gopes, it was displayed in a chrine with human skulls in recesses above and pig skulls below. Teh shrined was to the the left as one entered the men's house (dubu weneh) in Kinomere village, opposite the shrine incorporating the previous object. It was the property of Gormier, the chief of the Dubu Diama of Urama Island. Previously, it had belonged to his father. A pohotograph of Gormier himself is included in Hurley, 1924: 191. In the 1924 photograph published by Newton, 1961, fig. 190, the five bullet holes do not appear. They may have resulted from a punitive expedition or from vandalism during World War II.
