Artist Biography: (none) PROVENANCE: "Walter Randel Collection, New York." (Catalog #357, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 141.) PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "Despite its scars and arrow holes, this ancient war shield retains its haunting image of a primordial spirit face. Unfortunately, no specific information is known about the designs. The pattern on the shield seems, although not exactly identical, related to that on a shield collected during the Kaiserin-Augusta River Expedition and now at the Linden-Museum, Stuttgart (see Haberland, 1963, pl. 4, fig. 1). It also resembles the spirit face, wundjumbu, of the Iatmul people (see pl. 160 and 223)."
