PROVENANCE: "Collected by Michael Hamson in the 1990s at Ambukanja village in the Boiken territory, but almost certainly imported from Abelam." (Catalog #300, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 132.)
PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "This mask is very unusual. If worn, it was probably secured to a fiber costume such as pl. 174 and 175. Noel Mc Guigan (personal communication) has seen similar masks in Waigagum (Waigakum) and Yenigo villages in the northern Abelam region, and there may be two examples in the Museum der Kulturen, Basel, according to Philippe Petlier."
