PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "The minimal decoration and style of headdress indicate a role in a minor initiation ritual according to Noel Mc Guigan (personal communication). The oval body decoration is called yaual. Arapesh figures frequently show the hocker position with raised arms but squatting figures with the hands in front of the abdomen and standing figures also occur. For a number of comparable figures, see Coleman and Cunningham, 1975, figs. 111-31; in particular, figs. 111-18, 122, 124 and 130-31; see also Nicolas, 2001, fig. 326. Several of these show similar motifs decorating the torso. The bars connecting the arms with the knees are unusual but may have been required by the figure's extreme attenuation." 1995 - Meyer, 1995, fig. 355.
