See pl. 167 and 168. the mwai image represents the public face of the wagan cult, the principal religious secret society of the Iatmul people (see Forge, 1973: 171). A similar object was collected in Tambanum village on the Kaiserin-Augusta River Expedition in 1912-13 (Kelm, 1966-68, vol. 1, no. 234)."
