(Catalog #221, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 117.) PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "The carving is rendered in the shape of the mwai mask. See pl. 167 and 168. the mwai image represents the public face of the wagan cult, the principal religious secret society of the Iatmul people (see Forge, 1973: 171). A similar object was collected in Tambanum village on the Kaiserin-Augusta River Expedition in 1912-13 (Kelm, 1966-68, vol. 1, no. 234)."
