Artist Biography: (none) PROVENANCE: "Douglas Newton Collection, New York." (Catalog #111, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 99.) PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "As two published examples would suggest, the mask was probably once decorated with cassowary feathers and with shell ornaments. The main structure of the mask is of animal bone. In one published example, "the frontal section of a pig's skull" is used but other types of bone also occur, including marine turtle skulls. The mask has a wooden nose attached while the two published examples have a cane loop for a nose (Guiart, 1963, fig. 174; Meyer, 1995, fig. 207)."
