Artist Biography: son of Mary Robertson Bradbury and John Galen Howard. He moved with his family to California in 1902; majored in journalism at UC Berkeley, before turning to art. While on a summer holiday in Europe in 1924 he met artist Grant Wood who influenced his decision to abandon a career in writing and become a painter. Returning to NYC, he began painting and remained a self-taught artist. Although most of his career was spent as a resident of NYC and London, after 1927 he made many trips back to visit his family in California. He exhibited regularly with the SF Art Ass'n, Galerie Beaux Arts, and with brothers Robert and John. During the WWII years he lived in SF and taught at the CSFA in 1945. After the war he returned to England. A modernist who worked in oil, tempera, watercolor and pen-and-ink, Howard's works are often surreal or abstract.
