Artist Biography: (none) PROVENANCE: "Douglas Newton Collection, New York." (Catalog #351, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 140.) PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "The shape of this object suggests it is not truly a mask to be worn by a masquerader, particularly because the eyes are not pierced. No information on its former use is available. The object shows a stylistic relationship with Wogamush masks in such details as the eyes and mouth (see Newton, 1971, figs. 89-90). But without pierced eyes, it is doubtful that it was worn. Perhaps it was kept in the ceremonial house or served as a canoe shield mask. (For such a mask from Kupkein village, see Kocher Schmid in Greub, 1985, fig. 14, and Newton, 1979, fig. 22.65. For an Iwam example, different in style but comparable in concept because of the bird's head surmounting the face, see Kaufmann, 1980, fig. 106.)"
