Artist Biography: (none) PROVENANCE: Jolika Collection of New Guinea Art PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "In the Asmat, bark bowls of this sort were used to serve a delicacy, sago grubs, which are the larvae of the Capricorn beetle. in former times, these were mixed with the brains of headhunting victims (Dirk Smidt, personal communication). The design below the eyes probably represents swirling water (Schneebaum, 1985: 145; and Konrad and Konrad, 1996: 321)."
