(1) The influence of Oceanic art on Modern art can be traced through many objects and masks in the Jolika Collection. American art historian Robert Goldwater, director of the Museum of Primitive Art in New York, and author of Primitivism in Modern Art, stated that The arts of primitive peoples have widened our concept of what art is, have made us realize the many shapes art can assume, the diverse roles it can play, the multiple and ambiguous meanings it can embody. (2) Exemplifying the interests of French artist Jean Dubuffet and American Abstract Expressionist artists of the 1940's, this mask was included in MOMA's Primitivism show in 1984. (3)
Mud as a material challenges our notions of beauty. But, the thick incrustation on this mask was directly related to its ritual efficacy. New Guinea masks served their wearers as mediums between the past and future, the spirit world and the earthly realm. Throughout their collecting experience, the Friedes have been captivated by the fascinating use of unprocessed natural materials to create such effective compositions."
