PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "The Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam, displays the published example which most closely resembles this carving. It is almost twice the height of the present object and is identified as Irivake (see below). Smaller figures, called bioma, are also found in the region and, on the basis of size, this could be a bioma. See Newton, 1961, fig. 159 for a number of bioma in situ with associated pigs' skulls, indicative of the bioma's positive function in relation to hunting. However, this figure differs so much in feeling from the hundreds of other bioma that I have seen that I believe it has a relationship with the larger figures or half-figures of Irivake (Ereveki, Igovake), a powerful mythical hero associated with headhunting. He is thought to have his abode in th sky from where he releases thunder and lightening (see Newton, 1979, figs. 25.6 and 25.8; and Smidt, 1975, fig. 8; Smidt, 1990: 325-27, cat. no. 121)."
