(Catalog #46, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 90.)
PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "This figure was probably used as a personal amulet or in a private household shrine. The pubic cover is made of bark cloth and serves as a visible token of male initiation. The basketry fringe may have served for the attachment of human hair. In 1918, A.B. Lewis collected in Murik village a figure so similar it could be by the same artist (Field Museum, Chicago, 140900 [3354]). It also has a basketry beard and a loincloth.
