The Marcia and John Friede Collection, a Promised Gift to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco L05.1.306
Artist Biography: (none)
PROVENANCE: Jolika Collection of New Guinea Art
PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "The iconography of this archaic style of peeler was described by the German naval physician Emile Stephan (1972-1908; see Zimmerman 2000: 73). Observing the object in profile, the notch just below the nose is the mouth; the two loops, separated by two horizontal forms, combine to represent what is probably a ceremonial ornament of a pair of boar tusks worn by adult men on the breast but sometimes held in the mouth. See pl. 391 for use and context." (Catalog #392, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 149.)
