Artist Biography: (none) PROVENANCE: "Georges de Miré Collection, Paris; Tristan Tzara Collection, Paris." (Catalog #56, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 91.) EXHIBITIONS: 1957 - Cannes, 1957, "Arts d' Afrique et d'Océanie." 1930 - Galerie Pigalle, Paris, 1930, "Afrique Océanie." PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "I have seen five other Watam masks of this type. The best three are in the Museum für Völkerkunde, Berlin, the Museum für Völkerkunde, Hamburg, and the Mia and Loed van Bussel Collection, Amsterdam. The Museum für Völkerkunde in Berlin also has a second one and there is a lesser example in the Denver Art Museum. See Kelm 1968, vol. 3, nos. 191 and 192, for the Berlin masks, both of which were collected in Watam village by Neuguinea Company in 1900. The others are unpublished. The Hamburg mask was collected on the Hamburg South Seas Expedition, 1908-11."
