Lime spatula, 19th century
Ebony
The Marcia and John Friede Collection, a Promised Gift to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco L05.1.302
Artist Biography: (none)
PROVENANCE: "Collected by missionary Charles W. Abel and given by him, probably in 1901, to a relative in England. Sold at Philips in London, circa 1980. Marc de Monbrison Collection, Paris." (Catalog #412, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 153.)
PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "According to Harry Beran, anthropomorphic Massim spatulas vary considerably in style. This spatula is the only one known of its style and was already of considerable age when it was collected. Charles Abel served at Kwato near Samarai village in the southern Massim area from 1891 until his death in 1930 (Lacey, 1972: 1). This information, and the prominent eyes of the figure, which are extremely rare compared to the usual incised eyes, suggest that the spatula was carved in the southern Massim region." (Catalog #412, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 153.)
