Wood, pigment
190.5 x 38.1 x 10.2 cm (75 x 15 x 4 in.)
The Marcia and John Friede Collection, a Promised Gift to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco L05.1.299
Artist Biography: (none)
PROVENANCE: Jolika Collection of New Guinea Art
PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "The design suggests to me a representation of the sago grub, the larva of the Capricorn beetle, which is a favorite Asmat delicacy. The shield design is reminiscent of the motif on a sago petiole painting in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, which is from the upper Sepik village of Itelinu, in the West Range beyond the May River. Asmat people, at least in the interior, are believed to include emigrants from the Upper Sepik (Phillip Guddemi, personal communication)."
