Artist Biography: (none) PROVENANCE: "Serge Brignoni Collection, Bern, Switzerland." (Catalog #193, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 114.) EXHIBITIONS: 1991 - The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1991, "New Guinea Bone Carvings." PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "A complete gourd and spatula, with all decoration preserved, is very rare. According to Kocher Schmid in Greub, 1985: 185, text with no. 40, such shell-decorated ceremonial lime gourds were 'most probably used by shamans when going into a trance, or at divining rituals before head-hunting raids.'
