PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "This exquisite female aripa has an energy and youthful posture I have not seen in any other example. The care and refinement shown in its details may be fully appreciated by comparison with another figure now in Basel (see Haberland, 1968, fig. 50). The impression of youthfulness is confirmed by field reports: Kaufmann (2003: fig. 38) describes that figure just referred to as a 'representation of a young woman from the mythical period.' A superb carving of an adult woman, also collected by Douglas Newton, can be seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (see Newton, 1967, fig. 87). That one has a variation in design in that the arms and breasts are shaped in an openwork arrangement. These female figures are thought to represent mythical "mothers of the hunted game or meat" (Haberland, 1974: 375); they were probably consulted prior to hunting expeditions. The present figure was obtained by Newton in pieces and carefully reconstructed with no additions."
